How I Capture Sunstars in Landscape Photography
Sunstars are among my favourite details in landscape photography. When the sun slips behind a mountain ridge, tree trunk, sandstone arch or old building, a small aperture can transform the bright disc into a crisp burst of light. The effect adds structure and energy to an image while still feeling connected to the landscape.
Capturing that burst takes more than pointing a camera towards the sun. I work with the position of the light, the shape of the scene, exposure, lens choice and the practical conditions of the location. Light Starts Before The Shutter

Small changes in position make a significant difference. I may move a few centimetres left or right until the sun peeks around the obstruction. Shadow recovery is useful, but excessive lifting can make the scene look flat and introduce noise.
If I blend exposures, I keep the transition subtle. The brighter foreground should still match the direction and colour of the available light. I also remove sensor spots and distracting flare marks, while leaving small atmospheric touches that belong to the moment. The goal is a believable landscape, not a sun effect pasted into an unrelated scene.
